With its over 9,000 students, the Technical University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt, THWS in short, is one of the major technical universities of applied sciences in Bavaria. The ten THWS faculties offer more than 60 bachelor’s and master’s programmes. The diverse and future-oriented curriculum covers the areas of technology, business and economics, social sciences, computer science, design, and languages. Studies at THWS are characterised by outstanding practice-orientation. Internship semesters, research projects, and a high proportion of lab and seminar work make up the practice relevance of studies at the Technical University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt. Students are optimally prepared for the requirements in companies and in their careers. Cooperative study programmes and the TWIN programmes, which are unique in Germany, round off the study offers. Another innovative feature are the degree programmes at the new THWS Online Campus, that can be completed 100 percent online.

THWS is an internationally-oriented higher education institution educating students from numerous nations. In addition to English-taught master’s programmes, THWS has developed the so-called TWIN Programmes that enable students to switch between the German- and the English-taught programme variant. After successful completion, students are awarded a TWIN certificate. This leads to diverse study groups whose members benefit from the different linguistic and cultural competences. THWS also has a network of over 200 international partner universities across the world, at which THWS students can complete a semester abroad. Within the framework of the THWS Campus GATE, students from the Arab world can start their studies of Hydrogen Technology or Social Work at the German Jordanian University (GJU) in Jordan and complete it at THWS in Germany. Some of THWS’ online degree programmes offer international students the opportunity of obtaining a German university entrance qualification (HZB) by completing a pre-year in cooperation with GJU. This allows them to transfer to the online degree programmes at THWS.

Numerous labs, institutes, and technology transfer centers promote applied research and enable students to put their theoretical knowledge into practice. As per the research map of the German Rectors' Conference (HRK), THWS has chosen three research focuses: “Energy technology and energy efficiency”, “Human and mobility”, and “Digital and intelligent systems". The graduate schools “Sustainable and intelligent systems” (NISys) and “Changing living environments – perspectives from social and health sciences” (LiWa) enable students to complete doctorates at THWS in engineering or health and social sciences respectively without requiring a cooperating university. In 2024, THWS established the cross-university graduate school NISys in collaboration with Aschaffenburg University of Applied Sciences and Coburg University. Doctoral students may start their doctorates with the graduate school LiWa from 2026.
